THE SIXTH ANNUAL CHILDREN'S LITERATURE CONFERENCE FEATURES THREE NEWBERRY AWARD WINNERS CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va., June 20 -- Featured speakers at the sixth Annual Celebration of Children's Literature will include three Newberry Award winners and a book editor. The conference, co-sponsored by University of Virginia Continuing Education, will be held Monday, Aug. 4, from 8:45 a.m. to 3:45 p.m. at the Learning Resource Center auditorium on the campus of Virginia Highlands Community College in Abingdon, Va. Designed to help elementary teachers and public and school librarians strengthen children's appreciation of literature, the program will feature nationally recognized children's writers speaking on the process of writing and what they hope to achieve with their stories. Session highlights: Charlotte Huck, editor of the classic "Children's Literature in the Elementary School" and author of "Princess Furball" and "Toads and Diamonds," will give the opening and closing addresses. Huck is a past winner of the prestigious Newberry Award of the American Library Association for her lifetime contributions in the field of children's literature. Anita Lobel, award winning illustrator, will speak on the "art of illusion." Her books have appeared on the New York Times and American Library Association "best books" lists. She has collaborated with Huck on two books and won the Caldecott Honor Book Award. Author Bruce Brooks, will expand the scope of the conference to include young adult literature. His first book, "The Moves Makes the Man," won both the Newberry Honor Award and the Boston Globe/Horn Award for 1985. Susan Hirschman, editor-in-chief of Greenwillow Books, will talk about "what one over editor looks for" in a manuscript. She was recognized in 1997 by the Newberry committee for her lifetime contributions to children's literature. Panel participants will cover topics that include challenging books being published for young adult readers and the best children's literature of the last two years. The Celebration of Children's Literature, held each year during the Virginia Highlands Festival, is sponsored by the University of Virginia Southwest Center, the Library of Virginia, and the Creative Writing Committee of the Virginia Highlands Festival in cooperation with Virginia Highlands Community College.
