94-03-11 Series of Radio Programs Receives National Recognition SERIES OF RADIO PROGRAMS RECEIVES NATIONAL RECOGNITION CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va., March 11 -- University of Virginia radio station WTJU's series of programs, "Women of the World," was selected for honorable mention in the 19th annual commendation awards of the Foundation of American Women in Radio and Television. The series of five programs, commemorating Women's History Month, was developed and produced by Ginger McCarthy. It features excerpts from the autobiographies of Miriam Makeba, Maya Angelou, Gwen Raverat, Anne Frank and Harriet Jacobs that describe how each used self-expression to overcome physical or psychological oppression. Founded in 1957, WTJU-FM is a non-commercial radio station with a volunteer staff composed of U.Va. students, alumni and members of the community.
