94-03-16 Public Service Announcement PUBLIC SERVICE ANNOUNCEMENT Richard Sennett, professor of history and sociology at New York University, will visit the University of Virginia on March 23 to give a lecture on "Speed and Place: Contrary Experiences of the City," sponsored by the Commonwealth Center for Literary and Cultural Change. The lecture will be at 3 p.m. in U.Va.'s Mechanical Engineering Building, Room 341. Sennett has written a number of important books on American urban culture, including "Families Against the City," "The Uses of Disorder," "Nineteenth-Century Cities," and "The Hidden Injuries of Class." In his latest book, "The Conscience of the Eye," he explores the relation between urban design and the social life of modern cities, focusing particularly on New York. Sennett's lecture is part of the Commonwealth Center's ongoing seminar series on "Technology, Human Values and Cultural Change," an interdisciplinary discussion of issues in technology and culture.
