94-03-23 Darden School Alumni to Explore Ways to Help Inner Cities DARDEN SCHOOL ALUMNI TO EXPLORE WAYS TO HELP INNER CITIES CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va., March 23 -- Approximately 100 Darden Graduate School of Business Administration alumni will return to the University of Virginia Saturday, March 26, to investigate how large firms and small businesses can stimulate urban development. The Black Business Students Forum is sponsoring the day-long session, "Controlling Your Space: A Plan for Urban Development," which will begin at 10 a.m. in Room 210 at the Darden school. During a morning panel William Harris, a U.Va. professor of urban planning and a member of the Charlottesville Planning Commission, and Henry Edwards, vice president of human resources at Finast Inc., will describe how corporate America can help inner cities. Harris, who researches community development in predominantly black neighborhoods, is director of the Center for Housing and Social Environment. Edwards, who heads Finast's urban investment initiatives, will describe how his company has invested more than $30 million in building or remodeling supermarkets in inner cities. After lunch, Cassandra Pulley, a deputy administrator with the Small Business Administration (SBA), will describe entrepreneurial ventures that can help American cities. In addition to her SBA duties, Pulley is president of an organization that specializes in business development, foreign trade and investment initiatives. The sessions are open to the public, although a registration fee is required.
