94-03-29 Noted American Literature Critic Richard Poirier to Speak at U.Va. April 6 and 7 NOTED AMERICAN LITERATURE CRITIC RICHARD POIRIER TO SPEAK AT U.VA. APRIL 6 AND 7 CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va., March 29 -- Richard Poirier, considered by many to be the most distinguished critic of American literature now writing, will give the 1994 Peters Rushton Lectures at the University of Virginia April 6 and 7. Poirier, professor of English at Rutgers University and founder and editor-in-chief of Raritan Quarterly, will speak at 8 p.m. in Room 153 Campbell Hall both nights. The English department lectures are free and open to the public. In the lectures Poirier will develop the view that there is an essential quality that distinguishes literature from other forms of writing. His April 6 talk is titled "Writing for God and Mammon." His April 7 lecture is titled "Making a Gap in Nature: Cleopatra and Gertrude Stein." Poirier, who is chairman of the board of the Library of America, is the author, among other books of "A World Elsewhere," "Robert Frost: The Work of Knowing," "The Performing Self," "The Renewal of Literature," and "Poetry and Pragmatism."
