Twenty teams competed in the regional tournament Feb. 24-26 at the University of Tennessee at Knoxville. The U.Va. team won 11-0, defeating Vanderbilt in the finals. ÒThe region in which the University competes is the toughest in the nation, containing such strong College Bowl programs as Vanderbilt and the University of North Carolina. It is the only region to produce four different national champions,Ó said U.Va. team coach Thomas F. Michael. The region contains schools in Virginia, North and South Carolina, Tennessee and Kentucky. To prepare for the national championships April 28-30 at the University of Akron in Ohio, team members will hold bi-weekly practices, engage in question writing and play several other tournaments. Among the 16 teams at the national tournament will be those from Harvard, Cornell, Princeton and Stanford. The U.Va. team won the national competition in 1993 and was runner-up in 1994.
