AFRICAN-AMERICAN GROUPS TO DISCUSS HIGHER LEARNING CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va, March 30 -- University of Virginia students will encourage local high school minority students to pursue higher education in a conference Friday, March 31, in Newcomb HallÕs Cavalier Room. About 70 students from Charlottesville, Albemarle, Western Albemarle high schools and St. AnneÕs Belfield School will discuss an Òachieving your potentialÓ theme at the inaugural African-American High School Student Leadership Conference. ÒWe want African-American students to leave the conference feeling confident enough to pursue higher education,Ó planning committee member Tammy Saunders said. ÒWe want them to reach the highest level of academic success possible.Ó Sponsored by the African-American Student Leadership Association, (AASLA) the conference will include workshops and discussions designed to build self-confidence and help students make choices about attending college.
