REPORTERS: A conference schedule is attached. U.VA. HOSTS CONFERENCE TO PROMOTE HISPANIC, LATINO LEADERS CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va., March 21 -- About 150 students from regional universities are expected to attend the first Hispanic/Latino Student Leadership Conference to be held at the University of Virginia on Saturday, March 23. Designed to encourage students to assume leadership roles, the conference will explore the social, political and economic issues faced by Hispanics and Latinos. Keynote addresses by John Trasvina, U.S. Deputy Assistant Attorney General for Legislative Affairs, and Larry Romero, vice president of the Hispanic Chamber of Commerce, will be the highlights of a day filled with sessions that will explore such topics as racism, immigration and gangs in the inner city. Alejandra Castillo, from the Democratic National Committee Latino Outreach Department, will also speak on how to gain political influence at the local and national levels. Angela Kelly from the National Immigration Forum will talk on immigration laws and its effects on the community. The idea for a conference came from Cinthia Fernholz, Debora Freitas, Marlon Valladares, Chrisse Switzer and Rafael Boglio, students in the Hispanic Leadership Seminar conducted by Ronald J. Stump, former U.Va. associate dean of students. "The conference planning committee's goal is to help form future leaders. The conference represents an unprecedented opportunity to listen to prominent speakers, network and discuss issues that concern the Hispanic and Latino communities," Fernholz said. ÒThe members of the Latino/Hispanic community who make it to college are a minority within a minority. Our responsibility is to become the future leaders of our community.Ó Conference organizers expect students to attend the day-long event from as far away as Cornell OVER and Brown Universities as well as from universities in the region, including Duke, North Carolina, Virginia Tech, James Madison University, Virginia Commonwealth University, George Mason and William and Mary. Registration fee for the conference is $15. The keynote addresses are free and open to the public. ### March 20, 1996 FOR MORE INFORMATION, contact Michelle Samuels at (804) 924-7438 or Cinthia Fernholz at (804) 979-2385.
