ECOLOGY-MINDED URBAN DESIGNER DIANA BALMORI TO LECTURE AT U.VA. SCHOOL OF ARCHITECTURE CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va., March 13 -- Diana Balmori, award winning urban designer and landscape architect who stresses the importance of ecology and environmental harmony in design, will present a Dean's Forum Lecture at the University of Virginia School of Architecture on Wednesday, April 2. The lecture, at 6 p.m. in 153 Campbell Hall, is free and open to the public. Balmori, founder of the landscape and urban design firm Balmori Associates and a faculty member at the Yale School of Architecture and Yale School of Forestry and Environmental Studies, was one of six finalists in the recent World War II Memorial competition. She is co-author of the influential books "Saarinen Garden: A Total Work of Art," "Redesigning the American Lawn: A Search for Environmental Harmony" and "Transitory Gardens, Uprooted Lives," as well as design guidelines for American Greenways for the National Rails-to-Trails Organization. Her firm's current projects include the University of Texas Master Plan; Owens-Corning World Headquarters in Toledo; Kuala Lumpur City Centre in Malaysia; the Prairie Waterway in Famington, Minn.; and the Washington National Airport redesign. At Yale Balmori teaches interdisciplinary courses including "Collaboration in Landscape: Art, Ecology and Architecture" and "Design Across Disciplines: Ecology and the Arts." She has also organized a long-range collaborative effort by five graduate schools at Yale to assist the city of New Haven with innovative planning strategies.
