CONFERENCE TO EXPLORE SCHOOLS THAT SUCCEED AGAINST THE ODDS CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va., March 14 -- What are the critical features that spell success for schools? They will be explored at a "Schools That Succeed Against The Odds" conference March 19 and 20 at the Boar's Head Inn. The conference will allow educators to learn about programs implemented nationwide that have built high academic standards, created safe schools and spurred community involvement. Principals will discuss how to institute high standards, apply instructional strategies, challenge students to accept responsibility and address financial and regulatory issues. Presented by the Lynchburg Center of the University of Virginia's Division of Continuing Education, the conference will focus on elementary schools March 19 and on middle and high schools the second day. Two hundred people are expected to attend the first day and 115 people on March 20. Presenters will include Robert Lynn Canady, Mary Abouzeid and Daniel Duke of U.Va.'s Curry School of Education as well as principals from schools of diverse settings. "The conference is geared to school administrators with special attention to principals who, in this era of site-based management, are often the ones who make the critical decisions that affect student success," said Nancy Iverson, director of the Lynchburg Center. The conference is part of the Division of Continuing Education's Standards of Learning Project, which helps teachers meet new state-mandated learning requirements in several subjects. It is presented in cooperation with the Virginia Department of Education. ### March 13, 1997 For more information, contact Nancy Iverson, director, Lynchburg Center, University of Virginia, Division of Continuing Education, at (804) 582-5107, 1-800-871-8265.
