AUTHOR OF BOOK ABOUT SEX DIFFERENCES TO GIVE FIRST ANNUAL JILL T. RINEHART LECTURE AT U.VA. CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va., March 28 -- A nationally-acclaimed author will present the first annual Jill T. Rinehart Distinguished Leadership Lecture at the University of Virginia's Minor Hall Auditorium on Wednesday, April 2. The 3 p.m. lecture is free and open to the public. Carol Tavris, author of "The Mismeasure of Woman" and other widely discussed books, will speak as part of a series of lectures established by a gift from local businesswoman Jill T. Rinehart, to promote women's leadership roles. The series of lectures and seminars, organized through the U.Va. Women's Center, examines leadership models for women in business, politics, academia and other professions. Rinehart, a 1980 graduate of the College of Arts and Sciences, founded the U.Va. Women's Center development board in 1990. The Women's Center opened in 1989. A resident of Los Angeles, Tavris is a social psychologist who writes extensively about gender issues. "The Mismeasure of Woman," published in 1992, examines common ways people think about men and women and dissects myths that perpetuate gender misunderstandings. Her landmark book, "Anger: The Misunderstood Emotion," examines myths about the causes and uses of anger. Tavris, a Fellow of the American Psychological Association and the American Psychological Society, is also the author of "The Longest War: Sex Differences in Perspective." Following the lecture, Tavris will answer questions from the audience. The lecture is part of the "Women and Leadership: Initiative 2000" series. ### March 27, 1997 For more information contact the Women's Center at (804) 982-2361.
