March 30, 1998 Contact: John Blackburn (804) 982-3375 U.VA. MAILS ACCEPTANCE LETTERS TO CLASS OF 2002 The University of Virginia has mailed letters offering admission into the 1998 entering class to 5,299 high school students. U.Va. officials anticipate a total of approximately 2,875 students, the same as last fall, will accept the admission offer and begin classes in the fall. Of that number, the University has already admitted 910 students through early decision. The entering class is expected to be about 55 percent women. "My staff and I are very pleased with the quality of the students who are being offered admission," said Dean of Admission John A. Blackburn. "The competition was very keen and we had to deny admission to many talented students, especially those from out-of-state." Blackburn anticipates that about 65 percent of the students will be Virginia residents. Approximately 2,000 students have been placed on a wait-list in case fewer students than anticipated accept offers, according to University officials. Of the entering class, approximately 2,250 will go into the College of Arts and Sciences, 90 into the School of Architecture, 490 into the School of Engineering and Applied Science, and 45 into the School of Nursing. ### Television reporters should contact our TV News Office at (804) 924-7550.
