94-05-12 U.Va. Graduation Weekend Events Set for May 21-22 U.VA. GRADUATION WEEKEND EVENTS SET FOR MAY 21-22 CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va., May 12 -- More than 20,000 persons, including family members and friends of the University of Virginia's 1994 graduating class, are expected to fill the historic Lawn for Final Exercises on Sunday, May 22. Weather permitting, the ceremony will begin with the traditional and colorful academic procession from the Rotunda at 10 a.m. Virginia Gov. George F. Allen, an alumnus of the College of Arts and Sciences and School of Law, will deliver the commencement address. Approximately 4,200 degrees will be awarded. After President John T. Casteen III confers baccalaureate, graduate and professional degrees, the 1994 graduates will receive their diplomas in separate ceremonies organized by each of the University's 10 schools at various locations around the Grounds. Inclement weather sites for Final Exercises vary according to schools and departments, with University Hall serving as the rain site for the College and Graduate School of Arts and Sciences ceremony and Gov. Allen's address. (For details on inclement weather sites, see the enclosed schedule.) Following the main ceremony Sunday, U.S. Surgeon General M. Joycelyn Elders will speak at a diploma ceremony for School of Medicine graduates on the lawn opposite the medical school. The location will be the same in inclement weather. John Merchant, a lawyer with the Connecticut Office of Consumer Counsel who in 1958 became the first African-American graduate of the School of Law, will speak at the law school's diploma ceremony in McIntire Amphitheater. The rain site is Memorial Gymnasium. On Saturday, May 21, ABC News Chief White House correspondent Brit Hume, a 1965 graduate of the College, will speak at Class Valediction Exercises. The ceremony, which also features presentation of the graduating class's gift of an endowment for student scholarships, will begin at 11 a.m. on the Lawn. University Hall is the rain site.
