CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va., May 27 -- Minority high school students from Charlottesville and nine surrounding counties who are considering careers in health care will get an academic boost this summer in a program offered by the University of Virginia. They will spend four weeks in non-resident classes at the U.Va. School of Medicine studying mathematics, laboratory concepts, computer science, communications skills and other subjects designed to better prepare them for college. U.Va. medical students will serve as mentors in the program, called Summer High School Academic Reach-Up Program (SHARP). Classes will start on July 5 and continue every weekday, from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., through July 29. SHARP is offered at no cost to students, with funding provided by the National Association of Medical Minority Educators, the State Council for Higher Education in Virginia and the School of Medicine. Applications, which will be accepted through Wednesday (June 1) have been distributed in area high schools and they are still available from the medical school's Office for Student Academic Support (804) 924-2189.
