DARDEN SCHOOL GIVEN $1 MILLION BY UNITED TECHNOLOGY CORP. FOR LEADERSHIP PROGRAMS, MATCHING GIFT FROM BATTEN FAMILY CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va., May 3 -- United Technologies Corp. (UTC) has given $1 million to the Darden Graduate School of Business Administration at the University of Virginia for the school's leadership and entrepreneurship programs, dean Lee Higdon announced today. Higdon said the gift is effectively $2 million, since it will be matched by an equal amount from the Batten Family Leadership Challenge, established by Frank Batten, chairman of Landmark Communications of Norfolk, his son Frank Batten Jr. and daughter Dorothy Batten. "This is a powerful statement about UTC's commitment to the Darden community," said Higdon. "With this important gift, the strong and mutually beneficial partnership between United Technologies and our school will continue to grow and flourish." Many members of UTC's management team have attended the Darden School's master of business administration degree program or its executive education programs, Higdon noted. A UTC executive, 1967 MBA graduate George David, is the current president of the Board of Trustees of the Darden School Foundation. Established in 1990, the Batten Challenge pledged to match up to $3.5 million in gifts from other donors to the school's leadership programs. With the UTC gift, the Batten effort has contributed more than $3 million in matching funds. Frank Batten is a leader and pioneer in the cable television business as well as publishing. His son and daughter are graduates of the Darden School. ### May 2, 1995
