U.VA. GRADUATION WEEKEND EVENTS WILL DRAW THOUSANDS MAY 20-21 CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va., May 10 -- More than 20,000 persons, including family members and friends of the University of VirginiaÕs 1995 graduating class, are expected to fill the historic Lawn for Final Exercises on Sunday, May 21. The ceremony will begin with the traditional and colorful academic procession from the Rotunda at 10 a.m. William J. Raspberry, syndicated columnist for the Washington Post, will deliver the commencement address. Approximately 4,200 degrees will be awarded, with RaspberryÕs son Mark James Raspberry scheduled to receive a B.A. among them. After President John T. Casteen III confers baccalaureate, graduate and professional degrees, the 1995 graduates will receive their diplomas in separate ceremonies organized by each of the UniversityÕs 10 schools at various locations around the Grounds. Inclement weather sites for Final Exercises vary according to schools and departments, with University Hall serving as the rain site for ticketed guests of the College and Graduate School of Arts and Sciences and the School of Engineering and Applied Science ceremony. Following the main ceremony Sunday, several schools will feature noted members of their profession at their diploma ceremonies: OVER U.VA. Nuland, a surgeon at Yale University and author of the book ÒHow We Die,Ó will speak to School of Medicine graduates on the lawn opposite the medical school. The location will be the same in inclement weather. ¥ Washington, D.C., ÒsuperlawyerÓ Robert S. Bennett, one of the countryÕs leading white-collar criminal lawyers, will speak at the law schoolÕs diploma ceremony in McIntire Amphitheater. The rain site is Memorial Gymnasium. BennettÕs clients have included President Clinton, former Rep. Dan Rostenkowski, former defense secretary Casper Weinberger and former defense secretary Clark Clifford. ¥ Bettye Martin Musham, president and chief executive officer of Gear Holdings Inc. and one of the countryÕs leading businesswomen and entrepreneurs, will speak at the Darden graduate business schoolÕs diploma ceremony at the Darden School. Rain site is the North Grounds Recreation Center. On Saturday, May 20, Marian Wright Edelman, president of the ChildrenÕs Defense Fund, will speak at Class Valediction Exercises. The ceremony, which also features presentation of the graduating classÕs gift of a fund for a Solar Energy Resource Center at the School of Architecture and fellowships to promote environmental sustainability, will begin at 11 a.m. on the Lawn. University Hall is the rain site. Dr. Robert M. Carey, dean of the School of Medicine, will give the baccalaureate address to graduating medical students at 4 p.m. in the University Chapel. His daughter, Alicia Carey Dagli, will receive her medical degree in family medicine. All ceremonies and addresses are open to the public, unless severe weather forces events indoors. ### May 9, 1995
