MILLER CENTER PROGRAM GIVEN $500,000 BY TAIWAN GOVERNMENT CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va., May 3 -- The Miller Center of Public Affairs at the University of Virginia has received a $500,000 gift from the government of the Republic of China on Taiwan to establish the C. K. Yen Chair for the study of political leadership in Asia. The gift supports the expansion of a program on leadership instituted and directed by S. C. Leng, Compton Professor at the Miller Center since retiring from the University's Department of Government and Foreign Affairs. C.K. Yen was a president of the Republic of China. His daughter is Nora Leng, wife of professor Leng. "This gift will enable us to continue an important program that adds a comparative dimension to the center's study of the American presidency," said center director Kenneth W. Thompson. "We can further deepen our understanding of leadership and open new horizons for thinking about Asia. In the past the government of Taiwan has made similar grants to centers and programs at Harvard University and the University of Michigan." ### May 2, 1995
