Martin, acting chairman of the emergency medicine department at the Medical College of Pennsylvania and Hahnemann University in Pittsburgh, has been named chairman of the Department of Emergency Medicine at the University of Virginia. His appointment, announced by Dr. Robert M. Carey, dean of the School of Medicine, is effective July 1 subject to his election to the faculty by U.Va.'s Board of Visitors. "I am extremely excited that Dr. Martin has agreed to lead our effort in emergency medicine as the first chairman of the department," Carey said. "His leadership experience in emergency medicine at the Medical College of Pennsylvania and nationally will be a tremendous asset to our program." Martin, who was born in Covington, VA, was director of the Emergency Medicine Residency Program at Allegheny General Hospital in Pittsburgh from 1984 to 1995. He serves on the Board of Directors of the Society for Academic Emergency Medicine (SAEM) and is president elect of the Council of Residency Directors in Emergency Medicine (CORD). He serves on the Board of Visitors of North Carolina State University and in various leadership roles for the American College of Emergency Physicians (ACEP). "He was the search committee's first choice because of his success in running an emergency department in a highly competitive managed care environment coupled with his strong commitment to medical education, "said Dr. Scott Syverud, interim chairman of the U.Va. emergency department and a member of the search committee.
