PUBLIC SERVICE ANNOUNCEMENT INFORMATION The public is invited to attend the events of graduation weekend at the University of Virginia: Saturday, May 18, Class Valedictory Exercises. James Carville, the well-known political strategist and campaign adviser, will speak. The event will begin at 11 a.m. on the Lawn. Rain site is University Hall. Retired U.Va. professor Raymond C. Bice will be the School of Nursing's speaker at its annual professional pinning ceremony at 6:30 p.m. on Saturday, May 18. The traditional candlelight lawn ceremony recognizes graduating nurses by presenting them with pins, indicating completion of the bachelor's degree program. Sunday, May 19, Final Exercises. The 10 a.m. ceremony on the Lawn will begin with the traditional academic procession from the Rotunda. NASA astronaut and U.Va. alumna Kathryn C. Thornton will be the speaker. With more than 20,000 people expected to attend, arrival well before 10 a.m. is advised. Seating will not be available except by ticket for three guests of each graduate. Other guests and the general public are invited to bring their own chairs to open areas behind the reserved sections. Dr. Marcella F. Fierro, the state's chief medical examiner and a nationally known authority on forensic pathology, will speak to medical school graduates at their diploma ceremony following the main ceremony. Her speech will begin at about 12:30 p.m. on the lawn in front of the Old Medical School building. In the event of severe weather, her speech will begin at 11 a.m. in that location. The Rev. Jesse Jackson, the longtime civil rights leader and noted political figure, will make brief remarks at the law school's diploma ceremony at about 12:15 p.m. in McIntire Amphitheater. In the event of severe weather, the ceremony would begin at 10 a.m. in Memorial Gymnasium. Jackson's son Yusef will be among the law graduates. BAD WEATHER: Final Exercises will be held on the Lawn unless weather conditions are severe. The decision to move the ceremony to University Hall will be made only in case of thunder, lightning, high winds or other conditions that make it unsafe to hold an outdoor ceremony. If conditions are severe, convocation at University Hall will be only for the College and Graduate School of Arts and Sciences and the School of Engineering and Applied Science. The University Hall ceremony would start at 10 a.m., with Thornton speaking shortly thereafter. The decision to move the ceremony to University Hall would be announced on local radio and television stations and via posted signs. In addition, people can call the Graduation Information Line at (804) 982-2908 or University Relations at (804) 924-3778. A decision about the graduation site will be made by 8 a.m. on Sunday. On Saturday bus service will start at 9 a.m. and end at 3 p.m. On Sunday buses will start at 7 a.m. Before Final Exercises on the Lawn, buses will stop on McCormick Road near Alderman Library. After exercises, buses will stop there and at the intersection of McCormick and Alderman Roads for the convenience of people attending diploma ceremonies at Slaughter Recreation Center and Gilmer Hall.
