U.VA. ANNOUNCES AWARDS FOR EXCELLENCE OF CHARACTER CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va., May 10 -- The University of Virginia will grant three Algernon Sydney Sullivan awards at its upcoming Valediction Exercises on May 18. The awards, which recognize excellence of character and service to humanity, will be presented to a psychology professor revered by thousands of former students and to two graduating fourth-year students. The criteria for selection include service to the University community and the personal traits of kindness and gentleness of spirit. Raymond C. Bice Jr., now University historian, for decades captivated his students as professor of psychology through a creative approach to teaching that used equipment now known as "Bice devices." Bice arrived at U.Va. in 1948 as an assistant professor of psychology. He later served as the dean of admissions and as secretary to the Board of Visitors. Barbara Gulick, of Adelphi, Md., has spent countless hours on a broad range of volunteer programs while a student at U.Va. They include: helping with the Holiday Sharing Program to see that needy families have holiday food and gift baskets; organizing a group of students to tutor local children living in transitional housing and at the Salvation Army shelter, and during spring break, living on a reservation in Tahlequah, Okla., to work with Native Americans. "Bobby" Chinh Quang Le, of Springfield, Va., has contributed greatly to various organizations that enrich student life and strengthen the University community. He has served as honor educator for the Honor Committee, as a member of the Asian Student Union and as a multicultural facilitator. The Algernon Sydney Sullivan awards were established by the New York Southern Society in 1925 to honor its first president. The awards are presented annually at U.Va. and at about a dozen other universities in the United States to two undergraduate degree candidates, a man and a woman, and a member of the university community. Recipients receive medallions, certificates and books on Algernon Sydney Sullivan. ### May 9, 1997 For more information contact Charlotte Crystal at (804) 924-6858.
