STUDENT RECEIVES FELLOWSHIP TO PURSUE COMMUNITY SERVICE CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va., May 10 -- For the third consecutive year, a University of Virginia student has won the prestigious Jane Addams-Andrew Carnegie Fellowship in Philanthropy. Fellows receive an introduction to the theory and practice of philanthropy. Gerard Saviola, a fourth-year Echols interdisciplinary major from New Rochelle, N.Y., will join the ranks of U.Va. graduates Kathryn Stallings and David Brumbaugh by participating in the Indianapolis-based program. The fellowship, which is given to only six people nationwide, awards students with a $15,000 stipend and an opportunity to engage in graduate study and volunteer service. The fellows work at non-profit organizations and travel to national conferences on philanthropy. Saviola has been active in both the University and Charlottesville. He has been a volunteer director of the Daycare program at Madison House, which coordinates community service opportunities for U.Va. students. He served on Madison House's board of directors this year and chaired its Benefit Ball last year. He has also been active in the University Guide Service, where he served as both scheduler and probationary chair. He was vice-chair of the Admission Committee, co-chair of University Union's short courses committee and chair for S.E.R.V.E., a community service program for first-years. He is also a brother in Delta Tau Delta fraternity. "I am more excited than I can explain. It's a wonderful opportunity to learn more about the theory as well as practical applications of the non-profit/public service sector. I'm also very excited to join Kathryn Stallings in Indianapolis. I think the fact that one of the six fellows has been a U.Va. grad for the past three years demonstrates our students' commitment to volunteerism," Saviola said. ### May 9, 1997 For more information contact Gerard Saviola at (804) 243-2354 or Cindy Fredrick, Madison House executive director, at (804) 977-7051.
