May 6, 1998 Contact: Lynn Rush (804) 982-5905 MCCORMICK ROAD TO CLOSE FOR REPAIRS MAY 18-AUG. 28 McCormick Road on the University of Virginia Grounds will be closed to through traffic, including buses, between Emmet Street and University Avenue while steam tunnels are repaired May 18 through Aug. 28. During that period, McCormick Road will be barricaded west of the Emmet Street bridge starting at Cabell Drive to the front of Clark Hall. Cabell Hall will be accessible via McCormick Road from the west. Throughout the construction, pedestrians will have access to the bridge over Emmet Street using the northern walkway along McCormick Road, which will have sidewalk curbcuts. From May 18 through July 25, Newcomb Road will be barricaded at Tucker House. This portion of Newcomb Road will reopen to traffic after July 25. A revised bus schedule route will be available from Parking and Transportation. One handicapped space, two service spaces and eight parking spaces along Cabell Drive behind Clark Hall will be lost for the summer. These spaces will be relocated to the C-1 parking lot south of Clark Hall. This project is to rehabilitate steam tunnels that have experienced structural problems due to the heavy traffic running over them, especially buses, for almost 50 years. ### Television reporters should contact the TV News Office at (804) 924-7550.
