93-11-15 Gerald Mandell, M.D. 31st President of Infectious Diseas RELEASE ON RECEIPT Contact: Katherine Jackson CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA., Nov. 16--The 31st President of the Infectious Diseases Society of America is University of Virginia professor Gerald L. Mandell, M.D. He is chief of infectious diseases and the Owen R. Cheatham Professor of Sciences. The Infectious Diseases Society of America consists of 4,000 physicians and microbiologists who have career commitments to the field of infectious diseases. The society fosters research and training and supports those dedicated to promoting human health through excellence in research, education, prevention and care of patients. A lectureship and two awards for outstanding contributions in the field are also supported by the society. Mandell is recognized internationally for his research and holds a MERIT award presented by the National Institutes of Health. The MERIT (Method to Extend Research in Kind) award provides long- term, stable support to investigators who have demonstrated superior competence and productivity. He recently published a textbook of infectious diseases, "Principles and Practice of Infectious Diseases."
