93-11-24 U.Va. to Join in Observing Sixth Annual AIDS Day U.VA. TO JOIN IN OBSERVING SIXTH ANNUAL WORLD AIDS DAY CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va., Nov. 24 -- A variety of activities designed to draw public attention to the AIDS epidemic will be held at the University of Virginia on Wednesday, Dec. 1, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Newcomb Hall courtyard. Dr. James Turner, director of U.Va.'s department of student health, will speak at noon, and at 12:15 p.m., U.Va. graduate student Stephanie Gertz will talk about how AIDS has affected her family. The 1989 Academy Award-winning feature "Common Threads-- Stories from the Quilt" will be screened at 12:30 p.m. under a tent in the courtyard. The theme of this year's observance, recognized in 180 countries worldwide, is "time to act." The day's purpose is to provide the University community with information to increase awareness about HIV/AIDS and reinforce HIV prevention activities. The observance will also promote the support and care of all HIV- infected persons, AIDS victims and their families and friends, according to organizers. Throughout the day brochures with current information on HIV/AIDS and free condoms will be available. In addition, members of the community-wide AIDS Support Group will be available to answer questions.
