93-11-29 Jean Sorrells-Jones,elected Fellow of the AAN in Washing RELEASE ON RECEIPT Contact: Katherine Jackson CHIEF NURSING EXECUTIVE NAMED FELLOW OF THE AMERICAN ACADEMY OF NURSING CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA., Nov. 30--Jean Sorrells-Jones, Ph.D., R.N., Chief Nursing Executive at the University of Virginia, was elected Fellow of the American Academy of Nursing in Washington recently. The Academy was established by the American Nurses Association to advance knowledge, education and the practice of the profession of nursing. "We're delighted but not at all surprised that the Academy has recognized Dr. Sorrells-Jones," said Dr. Don E. Detmer, vice president and provost for health sciences at U.Va. "Nursing plays an indispensable role in modern health care and she is an undisputed leader in her profession. Her leadership and professional abilities are major assets as we meet the challenges of health care reform, including the University's nursing education program." Sorrells-Jones was elected by the 800-member Academy for her outstanding contributions to the health of the American people and leadership in the profession of nursing. The membership is one of the highest honors an American nurse can receive. The Academy was founded in 1973 to "provide visionary leadership to the national profession and the public in shaping future health policy and practice that optimize the well- being of the American people." Sorrells-Jones' experience includes positions in nursing education, community health and clinical nursing practice. She completed her doctoral studies at the University of Chicago and holds bachelor's and master's degrees respectively in nursing and maternal-child nursing from the University of Colorado.
