BOARD OF VISITORS ESTABLISHES THREE NEW CHAIRED PROFESSORSHIPS CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va., Nov. 11 -- The University of Virginia Board of Visitors established three new chaired professorships at its meeting here today, bringing the number of endowed chairs to 360. In the College of Arts and Sciences the board established the Alice Griffin Professorship in English Literature in honor of the mother of an alumnus. The chair is supported by a gift from John A. Griffin in honor of his mother, a longtime professor of English at the City University of New York. John Griffin, a 1985 U.Va. alumnus, is president of a New York-based investment banking firm. Also in the College of Arts and Sciences the board established the T. Cary Johnson Jr. Professorship in History, in memory of a former distinguished history professor and chair of the department here. T. Cary Johnson Jr., who served on the history faculty between 1928 and 1967 and died in 1972, was widely admired for his rich contributions to the University as a teacher, scholar and administrator. The professorship is made possible by a gift from an anonymous donor. In the School of Engineering and Applied Science, the board established the Edgar A. Starke Jr. Research Professorship in Materials Science. It honors Starke, an internationally known expert on materials science who served as dean of the school from 1984 until this year and has been a member of its faculty since 1983. The chair was made possible by a gift from two graduates of the school, E. Morgan Massey and Sture G. Olsson, who are also members of the board of directors of the Virginia Engineering Foundation. Olsson was honored for his many services and financial contributions to the school, especially gifts toward the renovation of the old applied mathematics building, in 1989 when the structure was renamed Olsson Hall. Massey has been a major contributor to the University and several colleges throughout the Appalachian region, as well as the Massey Cancer Center at the Medical College of Virginia. ### November 11, 1994
