U.VA. LIBRARY TO CELEBRATE FOUR MILLIONTH VOLUME MILESTONE CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va., Nov. 1 -- A fine press printing of U.S. Poet Laureate Rita DoveÕs poem ÒLady Freedom Among UsÓ will formally mark the acquisition of the University of Virginia LibraryÕs four millionth volume in public ceremonies Nov. 8. Presentation of the work, hand printed and bound by artist Claire Van Vliet, owner of the Janus Press, will include remarks by Dove, U.Va. professor of English who is serving her second term as the nationÕs poet laureate, University President John T. Casteen III, Van Vliet, and University librarian Karin Wittenborg. The ceremony, open to the public, will take place in Newcomb Hall Theater at 3:30 p.m. Dove wrote the poem to commemorate the return of statue ÒFreedomÓ to the dome of the U.S. Capitol in October 1993 after it had been removed for refurbishment. In a sign of the times for academic libraries, an electronic version of the work will also be published by the library and placed on the Internet. In conjunction with the celebration, an exhibit titled ÒFreedom and Other Great GiftsÓ will be on display in the McGregor Room of Alderman Library through February 1995. The exhibit will focus on the importance of gifts in building the libraryÕs holdings, particularly its internationally-known collection of American literature. Also highlighted will be the libraryÕs extensive collection of Janus Press publications. ### October 31, 1994
