ÒRACE MATTERSÓ AUTHOR CORNEL WEST TO SPEAK AT U.VA. CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va., Nov. 11 -- Cornel West, author of the best-selling book ÒRace Matters,Ó will speak on business ethics related to minorities on Friday, Nov. 18 at the University of Virginia. His talk is free and open to the public. West will speak at 3 p.m. in Caplin Auditorium at the U.Va. School of Law, located on the North Grounds of the University just off Arlington Boulevard. A discussion period will follow. His talk is the first scheduled in this yearÕs Ruffin Lectures, an annual program featuring leading thinkers on ethical issues in business. Sponsor of the three-day event is the Olsson Center for Applied Ethics at the Darden Graduate School of Business Administration. West has written nine books and many articles for national publications and was co-author, with Tikkun Magazine editor Michael Lerner, of ÒBlacks and Jews: Conflicts and Coalescence.Ó In ÒRace Matters,Ó published last year, he argued that the major obstacle to good race relations in the United States is a sense of worthlessness that he sees as growing among African Americans. Born in Tulsa, Oklahoma, West graduated magna cum laude from Harvard University after only three years of study and went on to earn a masters degree and a doctorate at Princeton University.
