GOVERNOR APPOINTS BOSTAIN TO ADVISORY POSITION VIRGINIA BEACH,Va., Nov. 10 -- Dyanne Bostain, director of the University of Virginia's Continuing Education Center in Hampton Roads, has been appointed by Governor George Allen to the Virginia State Rehabilitation Advisory Council (SRAC). As a member of SRAC, Bostain will serve a three-year term and attend quarterly meetings of the council to advise the Department of Rehabilitative Services (DRS) on vocational programs for Virginians with disabilities. "I look forward, with sincere enthusiasm, to representing consumers with disabilities and their families, service providers, business, industry and state agencies. As an individual with a disability, I am someone who received services through vocational rehabilitation. The help provided through Rehabilitative Services enabled me to receive an education and to enter educational administration at U.Va. I can now give back to the Commonwealth by serving on the State Rehabilitation Advisory Council," Bostain said. The council, established in January 1994 by the Virginia General Assembly, evaluates the effectiveness of functions performed by DRS, which provides vocational rehabilitation services for the state. The vocational services help individuals with disabilities obtain and retain employment by identifying their skills. DRS also offers assistance in securing residences, medical services and technological aids for individuals with disabilities. After advising and analyzing the efficiency of these services, the council will prepare an annual report on the status of vocational rehabilitation programs for the governor and the commissioner of Rehabilitation Services Administration. As director of the Hampton Roads Center, Bostain manages master's degree programs in education and engineering in addition to seminars on business and health care. She also developed and continues to direct the nationally recognized Virginia Youth Violence Project, which trains teachers and administrators about school safety. A native of Virginia Beach, Bostain graduated from Old Dominion University with a bachelor's degree in psychology and a master's in counseling. In 1988, Bostain received her doctorate in higher education administration at the College of William and Mary. ### November 9, 1995
