MASTERCARD INTERNATIONAL GIVES $2.5 MILLION TO DARDEN SCHOOL CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va., Nov. 29 -- MasterCard International Incorporated will give the Darden School, the University of Virginia's graduate school of business administration, $2.5 million over five years to support the school's ongoing strategic initiative focused on leadership and entrepreneurial thinking. MasterCard's gift will fund three programs: an endowed professorship, the MasterCard Distinguished Chair in Entrepreneurial Leadership; the MasterCard Scholars program, which would provide full tuition scholarships to five M.B.A. degree candidates each year; and a research alliance investigating fundamental business transformations in the consumer payments industry. "Darden's sustained commitment to leadership and entrepreneurial thinking supports MasterCard's vision of what today's corporate leaders need to manage through continuous cycles of change," said H. Eugene Lockhart, president and CEO of MasterCard International. "Our alliance with Darden provides an important platform for MasterCard to explore the fundamental changes confronting our industry today and at the same time help prepare business leaders for the next century," he said. Lockhart received his M.B.A. degree from Darden in 1974 and was elected a member of the Board of Trustees of the Darden School Foundation in October. "MasterCard's generosity will have a profound effect on the entire Darden community, and will encourage synergy among the School's research, course development, teaching, and admissions," said Leo I. Higdon Jr., dean of the Darden School. "MasterCard's multifaceted support for leadership and entrepreneurial thinking will help capitalize on Darden's unique approach of teaching across traditional disciplines to better prepare our students for the challenging and ever-changing business environment." The Darden School Foundation has exceeded its original $45.5 million capital campaign goal for endowment and construction. It is part of the University's $750 million capital campaign that began in October. The Darden School, which is ranked among the nation's top business schools, is celebrating its 40th anniversary this year. In January it will move into the new Darden Grounds, a five-building, 200,000-square-foot complex designed by Robert A.M. Stern.
