U.VA. PROFESSOR'S MUSIC RETURNS TO NEW YORK'S MERKIN HALL CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va., Nov. 22 -- The Chamber Music Society of the Lincoln Center will feature "Glyph," a musical composition by University of Virginia music professor Judith Shatin, as a part of its "Music of Our Time" series at New York's Merkin Hall on Dec. 4 at 8 p.m.. "Glyph" returns to Merkin Hall after its 1984 premiere by violist Rosemary Glyde and the Manhattan String Quartet. Shatin, chair of U.Va.'s McIntire Department of Music, scored the composition for solo viola, string quartet and piano at the Virginia Center for Creative Arts. Commissioned by Glyde, "Glyph" has been performed on numerous other occasions including the International Viola Congress at the New England Conservatory. Shatin's work will be featured at Merkin Hall in a concert along with the music of Toru Takemitsu, Olivier Messiaen, Christopher Culpo, and David Diamond. The pre-concert dialogue will begin at 7:30 p.m. with noted violist Paul Neubaur as soloist. Shatin, who directs the Virginia Center for Computer Music at U.Va., has won national acclaim for her innovative use of traditional and computerized techniques. Her works have been performed by symphonies in Denver, Houston, Minnesota and Richmond and by such ensembles as the Da Capo Chamber Players, Contemporary Music Forum, New Performance Group of Seattle and the E.A.R.
