CAREER EXPLORATION AND NETWORKING ARE FOCUS OF CAREER DISCOVERY DAY AT U. VA. CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va., Nov. 9 -- Exploring careers and creating networks that can pay off in job searches will be the main focus of a new program at the University of Virginia. Students can discuss career paths with representatives who do not usually recruit on grounds during Career Discovery Day Nov. 12, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Alumni Hall. In recent years U.Va.'s Office of Career Planning and Placement has sponsored career days in individual fields. This year, students can explore multiple fields including publishing, education, sports advertising, environmental sciences and government. Representatives from organizations such as the Howell Press, the Children's Defense Fund, Teach for America, Washington Sports & Entertainment and Federal Executive Institute will discuss what classes students should take, what graduate programs to pursue and what the job market offers. "Based on the idea that networking is critical in the job search, Career Discovery Day provides students one-on-one contact with professionals in a variety of fields," said Tom Fitch, OCPP's assistant director for experiential programs. "This activity is an opportunity to enhance that networking experience. Students can use this opportunity to complement what they are doing and shape their education for career fields that interest them." Career Discovery Day is co-sponsored by the Alumni Association and funded through the Parents Program of the University of Virginia Fund. OCPP estimates that approximately 1,000 students will attend. ### November 8, 1996 For more information, reporters should contact Tom Fitch at (804) 924-8911.
