U.VA. RECOGNIZES ALCOHOL, TOBACCO AND OTHER DRUG AWARENESS WEEK CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va., Nov. 9 - -Did you know? According to the 1996 Spring Health Behaviors Survey of 3,000 University of Virginia students: ¥ 91 percent report having tried alcohol. ¥ 79 percent have had alcohol in the past month. ¥ 45 percent report having consumed five or more drinks -- at one sitting -- in the two weeks prior to the survey. ¥ 48 percent report getting drunk at lease once in the two weeks prior to the survey. ¥ 41 percent have tried marijuana. ¥ 16 percent have used marijuana in the past month. ¥ 61 percent have tried tobacco. ¥ 32 percent have used tobacco in the past month. Fun and education are the draw for a week-long Alcohol, Tobacco and Other Drug Awareness Week Nov. 10-17 at the University of Virginia to help University students make healthy, responsible choices when it comes to drugs and alcohol. Twelve organization made up of students and faculty alike -- including representatives from the IFC/ISC, Office of Student Affairs, Yearbook, ABC Board, Cavalier Daily, First-Year Council, IM Rec Sports, Residence Life, SAFE, Peer Health Educators, the Alcohol, Tobacco, and Other Drug Committee, and the Institute for Substance Abuse Studies -- have banded together to sponsor the second annual Alcohol, Tobacco, and Other Drug Awareness Week. It's scheduled to begin Sunday, Nov. 10, with a 6 p.m. presentation titled: "How the Health Are You? The Effects of Alcohol on The Body." (Full schedule attached.) Other discussion topics throughout the week include: alcohol and sexual assault; alcohol and the law; alcohol and driving; alcohol and safety issues. Entertainment planned will include: ¥ Monday Night Football Pizza Party, the Tree House at 8 p.m. ¥ Happy Hours Aerobics, Friday at 5 p.m. ¥ "4th Year 5K Run," Saturday at 8 a.m. ¥ "Beat the Tarheels Tailgate," Saturday, Tuttle Dorm Courtyard at 1:30 p.m. ¥ Free Throw and 3-Point Basketball Shootout, Sunday, Slaughter Recreation Center at 4 p.m. On Wednesday at 2:55 p.m., students will have the opportunity to observe a moment of silence and reflection as the University Chapel bells ring in memory of the three University students who died in alcohol-related deaths during the past year. ### November 8, 1996 For more information, reporters should contact Sara Hickman at the Institute for Substance Abuse at (804) 924-5276.
