RELEASE ON RECEIPT TALK WILL ADDRESS INCREASING DEMAND FOR TEACHERS CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va., Nov. 5 -- The pressing need for teachers in the 21st century will be the focus of a public talk Wednesday, Nov. 5, at the University of Virginia. The session will begin at 1 p.m. in Room 004C of Ruffner Hall. David W. Breneman, dean of U.Va.'s Curry School of Education, and Sarah Turner, an assistant professor of education and economics, will examine forces determining the supply and demand for teachers in the 21st century. According to some federal projections, nearly 2 million additional teachers will be needed in the next decade to meet the demands of increased enrollments and rising retirement among current teachers. "These figures are often used as a rallying cry for greater federal investment in the training of teachers," said Turner. Breneman and Turner will briefly describe the forces determining teacher supply and demand, analyze proposed federal legislation, and describe their likely effects on the preparation of teachers in the next century. The talk is part of the 1997 Curry Forum on Educational Issues, a graduate-level course that focuses on key issues in education. ### November 4, 1997 For more information, contact Sarah Turner at (804) 924-7857 or via set5h@virginia.edu.
