Nov. 16, 1998 Contact: Jane Ford (804) 924-4298 Landscape: Layers of Memory LAURA EDWARDS EXHIBITS AT UVAÕs FAYERWEATHER GALLERY Laura Edwards, instructor in studio art at the University of VirginiaÕs McIntire Department of Art, creates landscapes by combining memory and imagination. The subject matter of her paintings is pictorial while the language of her painting is abstract. Through layers of color, texture and movement, Edwards creates monochromatic worlds. ÒIt is important to me that there is a monochromatic wholeness to the color. There is so much idiosyncrasy in the drawing and the little events that happen, the oneness of the color allows the complexity and the drawing to exist,Ó Edwards said. Her recent works will be on view in the Fayerweather Gallery at the University of Virginia from Nov. 16 through Dec. 11, weekdays 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. An opening reception will be held Nov. 20 at 5:30 p.m. The catalog accompanying the show describes her work: ÒGuided by paths of paint, traced and retraced, which stand out in relief from beneath transparent veils of color, the process of exploring the tactile surfaces replicates the process of their making. By engaging in this creative process, viewers are invited to join the artist in meditations upon place and memory, external and internal worlds, and the commensurability of historical and personal experience.Ó Edwards will give a slide talk on her evolution as a painter on Dec. 2, Campbell Hall 160 at 5:30 p.m. On Dec. 4 at 7 p.m. she will give a Gallery Talk in Fayerweather Gallery. Students in her drawing class will exhibit their landscape works from observation in the Hotweather Gallery beginning Nov. 20. ### Television reporters contact out TV News Office at (804) 924-7550.
