93-10-21 Edward Courtney, the New Gildersleeve Professor of Classics at U.Va., will lecture in Rotunda Oct. 27 EDWARD COURTNEY, THE NEW GILDERSLEEVE PROFESSOR OF CLASSICS AT U.VA., WILL LECTURE IN ROTUNDA OCT. 27 CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va., Oct. 21 -- Edward Courtney, an internationally recognized classics scholar who recently joined the faculty of the University of Virginia as the first Basil L. Gildersleeve Professor of Classics, will deliver a special lecture inaugurating the professorship at 4 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 27, in the Rotunda Dome Room. Courtney, a native of Belfast, Northern Ireland, and a former chairman of the classics department at Stanford University, will speak on "A Multicultural Encounter: The Greek Influence on Roman Culture." The lecture is open to the public. The Gildersleeve professorship is named for Basil Lanneau Gildersleeve, the preeminent American classicist of the 19th century who taught as a member of the University's classics department for two decades. In addition to the professorship, Gildersleeve fellowships for graduate study abroad and in residence have also been established through an endowment from the estates of Katherine Lane Weems and Emma Gildersleeve Lane, descendants of Basil Gildersleeve. Courtney, who has written numerous books and articles on Roman literature, was educated at Trinity College in Dublin and at Oxford University.
