93-10-28 University Students and Staff Collaborate Efforts for Community Service UNIVERSITY STUDENTS AND STAFF COLLABORATE EFFORTS FOR COMMUNITY SERVICE CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va., Oct. 28 -- The University of Virginia's Alpha Phi Omega (APO) service fraternity and University facilities management representatives will join forces Saturday, Oct. 30, from 9 a.m. until noon to clear brush along pedestrian routes. The brush will be cleared by 50 to 60 men and women along several routes and will only be postponed in the event of heavy rains: Behind Lambeth field residence area and south along the railroad tracks In the woods between Hong Kong Restaurant and Lambeth field residence area Along Emmet Street, between University Hall and the Child Care Center 2(between Massie and Copeley Roads) Around the North Grounds Recreation Center APO, a nationally recognized service fraternity known for its volunteer community work, selected this project because of its importance to safety and security efforts at the University. Facilities management will provide tools, materials, transportation and general guidance to assure safety compliance. "The work being done by the volunteer teams is important not just from a money-saving perspective but even more important, perhaps, for the peer respect and the teamwork it builds," said Jay Klingel, director of work management. The brush clearing marks the first of several collaborative efforts between APO and facilities OVER management.
