ASTRONOMER RUBIN TO LECTURE ON DARK MATTER ON NOV. 15 CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va., Oct. 29 -- Internationally known astronomer Vera C. Rubin will deliver the 29th annual Karl G. Jansky Lecture at 8 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 15, in the Gilmer Hall auditorium on the Grounds of the University of Virginia. The lecture, sponsored in part by the National Radio Astronomy Observatory (NRAO), is aimed at non-scientists. Rubin, a scientist at the Carnegie Institution of Washington and winner of the 1993 National Medal of Science, will speak on the subject of Ôdark matter.Õ RubinÕs studies have focused on the movements of galaxies. According to her measurements, galaxies display a rate of motion that indicates the presence of much more material than is visible. The amount and distribution of this non-illuminated dark matter is a subject of much debate. According to NRAO scientist David Hogg, ÒIf Dr. RubinÕs measurements are correct, and I believe they are, they reveal our lack of understanding in some fundamental aspects of the universe.Ó ### October 28, 1994
