UNIVERSITY TO HOST ENERGY CONSERVATION DAY OCT. 24 CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va., Oct. 20 -- The University will host its first annual Conserve Energy Day Tuesday, Oct. 24. Day-long events on the Lawn will reinforce the University's commitment to conservation, said Tony Motto, utilities energy conservation program manager. From 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. students, faculty and staff can test drive Virginia Power's electric car, view a geothermal display, check out an ozone exhibit, pick up useful recycling tips and take home free educational brochures and promotional items. The event is sponsored by Facilities Management's utilities department and Office of Recycling as well as Virginia Power. George Weinman, project manager for SECAP, the Student Engineering Challenge Airship Project, will present the "lighter than air" ship built by some 20 U.Va. Engineering School students who plan to fly the ship in the 1996 Airborne World Scholar Challenge Race. Throughout October, Energy Awareness Month, the utilities department is sponsoring a program to install occupancy sensors in classrooms, offices and conference rooms and to replace incandescent light bulbs with compact fluorescent lamps, all at no charge as long as funds last. To take advantage of these offers, contact Tony Motto at (804) 982-5073, or by e-mail at awm3g@virginia.edu. Samples of the sensors, compact fluorescent lamps and other energy conserving products, as well as charts tracking energy consumption at the University since 1980, will be displayed at the Oct. 24 exhibit. ### October 19, 1995 For more information, contact Tony Motto, energy conservation program manager, at (804) 982 5893, or Fritz Franke, recycling coordinator, at (804) 982-5059.
