WTJU JAZZ FUNDRAISER TO BE HELD OCT. 13-20 CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va., Oct. 11 -- Jazz music will fill the airwaves of Central Virginia for 146 hours over eight days as WTJU presents its annual Jazz Marathon Fundraiser. Beginning at 9 a.m. Friday, Oct. 13, and concluding the following Friday night, Oct. 20, jazz lovers can keep their radio dial set to 91.1 for the best in jazz, blues, world music and other jazz-related music. Listener-supported WTJU will extend its usual 31 hours a week of jazz programming to give both long-time listeners and new listeners an opportunity to hear great jazz and contribute financially to help keep this unique American art-form available in the Charlottesville area. A common thread through this yearÕs marathon will be programs focusing on composers who have contributed important works to the jazz repertoire. These include not only jazz composers such as Wayne Shorter, Miles Davis and Thelonious Monk, but popular composers like George Gershwin, Harold Arlen and others whose great melodies have become jazz standards. As always, local musicians show their support for WTJU by hosting programs and performing. Internationally known trumpeter, composer and arranger John DÕearth will present a show featuring the early compositions of Miles Davis. On Sunday afternoon pianist Art Wheeler will demonstrate the ties that bind jazz, blues and gospel music so closely, in a live performance from our studios. Saturday night Charlottesville resident and former RCA record executive August Blume will talk about his experiences with some of the great jazz artists he has met over the years. Blume will also bring along some rare recordings from his personal collection. Look for a live broadcast from the Prism Coffeehouse on Thursday night with Blue Indigo, a popular local jazz group comprised of George Melvin (organ), Sal Soghoian (guitar), Jeff Decker (sax), and others. Expect a number of surprise guests to drop by and sit in with the group. All this, in addition to the meat and potatoes of the marathon -- the programs presented by WTJUÕs staff of volunteer DJÕs. DonÕt miss out on this once-a-year feast for jazz fans. Apart from the primary premium of great music, other incentives for contributing will be offered -- CDÕs by top artists, a new T-shirt designed for WTJU by Valerie LÕHerrou, and other special premiums from local businesses to be announced. For further information, pick up a marathon guide at one of the many distribution sites, or call the WTJU office at (804) 924-0885. During the marathon, call (804) 924-3418 or (804) 924 3959 to make your pledge. ### October 10, 1995
