PUBLIC SERVICE ANNOUNCEMENT Warren Boeschenstein, professor of architecture at the University of Virginia, will deliver a slide lecture titled "Livable Communities: Design Strategies for Rail Corridors," on Oct. 23 at 6 p.m. in Campbell Hall Room 153. Boeschenstein argues that creating communities near commuter-railway stations is a logical and efficient way to reduce highway congestion, discourage urban sprawl, and conserve energy. "We're trying to offer an alternative model to a way of life based exclusively on the automobile," Boeschenstein says. "We're trying to give people more options in terms of travel and lifestyle." Boeschenstein, who teaches housing and urban design, and colleague Gary Okerlund received a Design for Transportation National Award from the U.S. Department of Transportation and the National Endowment for the Arts for their "Washington, D.C./Richmond Rail Corridor Study" in February 1996.
