RELEASE ON RECEIPT U.Va. School Of Nursing Doubles Fundraising Goal CENTENNIAL CELEBRATION, FUNDRAISING TO END DECEMBER 2001 CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va., Oct. 24 -- Strong giving to the University of Virginia School of Nursing has prompted the school to double its original campaign goal to $10.2 million and extend fundraising by 18 months to coincide with the school's 100th anniversary celebration in 2001. The Campaign for the School of Nursing has been overwhelmingly successful, raising approximately $6.3 million in private funds since July 1993. "Private gifts are making a significant impact on the School of Nursing. We can see real and lasting changes that make the difference between a good nursing school and a great one," said Dean Jeanette Lancaster. Since 1993, donors have established at least 14 endowed scholarships and fellowships and one endowed professorship. An intensive care simulation laboratory was built for clinical training; an endowed lectureship is almost completely funded for continuing education; and unrestricted giving to the Annual Fund has reached new heights. The new campaign goal will support the original priorities set by the school with increased monetary targets in several categories. New goals have been set for scholarships to attract and retain students, $2.4 million professorships to attract and retain faculty, $2.5 million; for faculty research, $3 million; and building the Annual Fund, $1 million. Goals to enhance technology, $1.2 million; and lectureships, $100,000 have remained the same. This is the nursing school's first major fund-raising effort. Although members of the school's administration and faculty identified over $10 million in needs during the campaign planning stages, a modest initial goal of $5.1 million was set. "In 1992 we were optimistic, but we had no idea if we could raise even $5 million," said Linda R. Davies, director of development. "Although nurses traditionally do not pursue highly lucrative careers, we have been blessed time and time again with generous, and in some cases, self-sacrificing gifts." By the time of the 1995 kick-off of the campaign's public phase, the school had already raised 65 percent of its goal. The Advisory Board and Campaign Steering Committee decided to add 15 percent to the goal and raised it to $5.85 million. Loyal alumni, parents and friends lead the School of Nursing Campaign, with individuals in these groups having contributed approximately 49 percent of all gifts. Foundations contributed about 33 percent. Although the University-wide campaign will end on June 20, 2000, the School of Nursing has decided to take advantage of the momentum created by the school's centennial celebration. The 100th anniversary celebration of nursing at the University of Virginia and the Campaign for the School of Nursing will run through Dec. 31, 2001. ### October 23, 1997 For more information, call Jeanette Lancaster, dean of the School of Nursing, at (804) 924 0063, or Linda Davies, director of development, at (804) 924-0097.
