Harrison III Law Grounds at the University of Virginia School of Law will feature a keynote address from Supreme Court Chief Justice William H. Rehnquist. Rehnquist, whose daughter, Janet Rehnquist, graduated from the Law School in 1985, will join several hundred alumni, students and faculty in celebrating the completion of the school's $30 million renovation and construction project. University President John T. Casteen III and law Dean Robert E. Scott will participate in the 10 a.m. dedication ceremonies. Funded entirely by private donations, the Law Grounds project nearly doubles the size of the Law School and recaptures a sense of community lost when the school moved from the University's Central Grounds to the North Grounds in 1974. The quadrangular, 311,382-square-foot complex comprises four distinct structures: on the west side, the newly renovated Withers Hall, the original Law School building; on the east side, Slaughter Hall, the former Darden Graduate School of Business building; on the south side, Buckner Clay Hall, the new formal entry building that also houses Caplin Pavilion, a formal assembly place; and on the north side, the recently completed Hunton & Williams Hall, the central gathering place for students. The Law Grounds includes two new moot courtrooms and an appellate courtroom; new and renovated seminar, small and large classrooms with outlets for laptop computers at every seat; a two-story library reading room; an 80-station computer lab; a University bookstore; and a Greenberry's cafe. Outdoors, the Law Grounds feature two courtyards, formal gardens and fountain, and a long, grassy expanse reminiscent of Jefferson's Lawn in the Academical Village. The Law Grounds complex is named in honor of David A. Harrison III, one of the University's most generous alumni. Harrison is a 1941 graduate of the Law School and has contributed $8 million to the Law School's Capital Campaign. The University of Virginia School of Law consistently ranks among the top 10 law schools in the nation. The Law School houses approximately 1,130 students, 64 full-time professors, and more than 50 adjunct faculty and administrators representing private practice, federal and state government, and the judiciary. It joins Harvard as one of only two law schools in the country whose graduates are employed at every one of the nation's top 100 law firms. The Law School has raised $86 million toward its $100 million capital campaign goal, scheduled for completion in the year 2000. A media tour of the Law Grounds will begin at 9:15 a.m. Interested reporters should contact Marion Kingdon, (804) 924-4678, for information. Project architects from the Baltimore firm of Ayers/Saint/Gross will be available for interviews following the one-hour ceremony. ### October 28, 1997 For additional information, contact Marion Kingdon at the School of Law at (804) 924-4678.
