RELEASE ON RECEIPT INVESTMENT CLUB SUCCESS LETS STUDENTS GIVE BACK TO U.VA. EVEN BEFORE THEY GET REAL JOBS CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va., Oct. 15 -- University of Virginia students learning how to manage money gave a $25,000 check recently to the McIntire School of Commerce's scholarship fund, returning part of the profits from their successful securities investments to the school. Through the McIntire Investment Institute, established in 1995 with a $100,000 gift from U.Va. alumnus John Griffin ('85, Commerce), undergraduates at the Commerce School have been able to study the ins and outs of financial investment by managing real money. And the results have been good. Over the past two years, their initial investment of $100,000 has grown to $180,000. It was part of this money that fourth-year Commerce student David Hang, the investment club president, handed to Carl Zeithaml, dean of the McIntire School, at the McIntire Investment Institute's Third Annual Round Table Discussion, held recently on Grounds. The McIntire Institute is one of many such programs at business schools around the country where students manage money as part of their education. Some students act as security analysts, researching companies, markets and products. They present the fruits of their research to a board of fund managers, also students, who make the investment decisions. The McIntire portfolio currently has 16 stocks, including such well-known corporate names as Intel Corp., the Travelers Group and Cisco Systems Inc. Participating in the Round Table Discussion, and offering advice to the students, were a small group of successful investors: Ted Weschler, partner, Quad-C Capital Inc.; Tom Humphreys, portfolio manager, Shadwell Partners; Rick Gerson, analyst, Blue Ridge Capital L.L.C.; and Griffin, president, Blue Ridge Capital. ### October 14, 1997 For more information about the McIntire School, call Denise Forster at (804) 924-7005.
