Colman McCarthy Keynote Speaker STUDENT CONFERENCE CONSIDERS "CHANGING THE WORLD" More than 100 students, administrators and faculty from across the state are expected to gather Nov. 6-7 at the University of Virginia to consider "Changing the World, One Student at a Time." That's the slogan of the ninth annual VA COOL Statewide Conference on Community Service and Higher Education. Conference participants will develop strategies for encouraging volunteer service on their campuses, share ideas and build leadership skills. Colman McCarthy, noted columnist and founder of the Washington, D.C.-based Center for Teaching Peace, will be the first speaker during the opening session on Friday, Nov. 6, at 7 p.m. in Wilson Hall, Room 401. He is expected to describe how students can be effective proponents of non-violent social change. Virginia State Senator Emily Couric will address the participants on Saturday, Nov. 7, during a lunch session from approximately noon to 1:15 p.m. She is expected to talk about how students can be agents of social change. Throughout Saturday participants will attend workshops designed to support volunteer service. Workshop topics will range from "How to Be an Animal Rights Activist" to "Starting an International Career With the Peace Corps." Other topics will address motivating students to engage in service learning, promoting diversity on college campuses and establishing a food recovery program. The Virginia Campus Outreach Opportunity League (VA COOL) is a statewide non-profit organization founded in 1989 by college students committed to advancing campus-based community service initiatives throughout the Commonwealth. Madison House, the student volunteer center at U.Va., is hosting this year's conference. ### Television reporters should contact the TV News Office at (804) 924-7550.
