Oct. 13, 1998 Contact: Katherine Jackson (804) 924-3629 LITERATURE SCHOLAR AND FORMER DEAN ROBERT KELLOGG TO SPEAK AT U.VA.'S FALL CONVOCATION Robert L. Kellogg, professor of English at the University of Virginia and former dean of the College of Arts and Sciences, will deliver U.Va.'s 1998 Fall Convocation address on Friday, Oct. 30, at 2 p.m. The Lawn ceremony, which officially opens Family Weekend, will honor more than 680 undergraduate students for their academic excellence. Students will be awarded Intermediate Honors in acknowledgment that they've earned grade-point averages of 3.4 or higher during their first two years at U.Va. The Thomas Jefferson Award, given annually to a member of the University community who exemplifies in character and achievements the ideals of the University's founder, also will be presented. The event is open to the public. Kellogg, an expert in medieval literature, joined the University faculty as an English instructor in 1957 while completing his doctoral degree at Harvard and was promoted to assistant professor in 1959. In 1964 he became an associate professor of English and in 1967 was appointed professor. He served as chairman of the English department for four years beginning in 1974 and also was chairman of the executive council of the Faculty Senate. He became Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences in 1978 and served until 1985. From 1985 until 1988 Kellogg was principal of Monroe Hill, U.Va.'s first residential college. Faculty attired in academic regalia will proceed from the steps of the Rotunda toward the South Lawn, signaling the start of the event. In case of rain, the convocation will take place in University Hall. A decision to move indoors will be announced by 10 a.m. Family Weekend at U.Va. also includes the University Forum, a public address by President John T. Casteen III on the state of the University, followed by a public question and answer session with U.Va. administrators.
