Oct. 22, 1998 AUTHOR TO DISCUSS THE MARKETING OF "COOL" TO KIDS Thomas Frank, author of the highly regarded book, "The Conquest of Cool," will speak on "Marketing Cool to Kids" on Friday, Oct. 30, at the University of Virginia. Frank, whose 1997 book explored the influence of the 1960s counter-culture on the American advertising industry, will speak on the marketing of "hip consumerism" in his talk beginning at 4 p.m. in Ruffner Hall Auditorium. The talk is a presentation of the third annual Curry School Forum on Media Literacy. A U.Va. graduate, Frank is editor-in-chief of the cultural criticism journal, The Baffler. He is also a contributing writer for The Washington Post, The Nation and In These Times. A diverse panel will react to Frank's speech. Panelists will include Daniel Lichtenstein, a local high school student; Munier Nazeer, a doctoral student in U.Va's Curry School of Education; and Peter Sheras, an associate professor of education at the Curry School. When the presentation concludes at approximately 6 p.m., Frank will sign copies of his book.
