"The goal of Saturday Academy is to give youngsters the academic and cultural background they need to help them in school now, as well as for future pursuits in higher education," says Rick Turner, dean of U.Va's Office of African-American Affairs. Parents and children attend the three-hour weekly sessions together. "This fosters a sense of joint participation in learning," says Turner. Subjects to be offered this year are basic and advanced mathematics, language arts, African-American history and culture, and SAT preparation. "Dance, poetry, lectures, music, and art will all be used in the history and culture component of the course," Turner says. Saturday Academy courses are taught by faculty, students, and other volunteers from throughout the University. The cost for each semester is $75. Interested parents may contact the Office of African-American Affairs at (804) 924-7923 for more information. ### September 14, 1993 Karen Castle, Office Services Specialist, University News Office P.O.
