THEORY SEMINAR BRINGS INTERNATIONAL SCHOLARS TO U.VA. TO DEBATE ISSUES CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va., Sept. 23 -- The Theory Seminar is a special new program designed to bring distinguished scholars and authors to the University of Virginia to give lectures and participate in debates on issues affecting a wide range of disciplines and society at large. Founded this year by faculty from several departments, including the Theory Seminar's director, Kenan Professor of Humanities Richard Rorty, the program is funded by U.Va.'s Academic Enhancement Program and sponsors free public events. The opening session on Thursday, Sept. 28, at 3:30 p.m. features Alan Ryan, professor of politics at Princeton University, and author of a recently released biography of John Dewey. He will give a talk called "The Idea of a Public Philosophy -- Post-Everything." On Friday, Sept. 29, at 3:30 p.m. Ryan's ideas will be debated and discussed by a panel of U.Va. faculty and Ryan will have a chance to respond. Other well-known authors and scholars coming this year include Slavoj Zizek from the University of Ljubljana, Solvenia; Bruno Latour from Paris, France; Homi Bhabha from the University of Chicago; Judith Butler from the University of California, Berkeley; and Barbara Herrnstein Smith from Duke University.
