TOP EDUCATION LEADERS TO ADDRESS TOP EDUCATION CONCERNS AT U.VA.'S FALL EDUCATIONAL FORUM CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va., Sept. 5 -- Virginia Secretary of Education Beverly Sgro will be one of more than two dozen regional education leaders and nationally recognized scholars addressing topics of concern during the Curry Forum on Educational Issues this fall at the University of Virginia. Started three years ago to address topics of interest to educators and parents, the forum gives students an opportunity to decide what to investigate, according to Peter Sheras, head of the three member faculty team in U.Va.'s Curry School of Education that is planning this semester's course. "The students create reading lists for each speaker. They help to determine the breadth of an issue," said Sheras, an associate professor of education. During the three-credit course, speakers will address such topics as multiculturalism, emerging technologies, attention deficit hyperactivity disorders and the historical and legal issues involved in conducting religious activities in public schools. The first speaker on Wednesday, Sept. 11, will be the 1996 Virginia Teacher of the Year Barbara Rivers Huneycutt, a third-grade teacher at Charlottesville's Venable School. The teacher-of-the-year honor recognizes Huneycutt's strength and expertise in technology. Among her accomplishments at Venable, Huneycutt established and continues to guide the Afterschool Computer Lab, which encourages parents to explore technology with their children. Huneycutt's talk, like those of all the speakers in the forum, will begin at 1 p.m. in auditorium 4B on the ground floor of Ruffner Hall. All speeches are open to the public. ### September 4, 1996 For more information, contact Peter Shears at (804) 924-0795.s
